Replacing the front door today represents a whole range of work. And this requires additional elements such as extensions and platbands. And if earlier the slopes were finished with cement mortar and paint, today such a design move is no longer used. The installation of extras on the front door with the subsequent framing with platbands came to the fore.
Door frame extensions
The new material, which is the add, appeared not so long ago. But without it it is difficult to imagine a modern doorway. Therefore, you should get to know him better.
Appointment
Why do I need an extension for the door unit? This element is designed to open the door after mounting the box.. The fact is that manufacturers in the manufacture of a box bar adhere to a standard size in width. And he is somewhat less than the depth of the doorway, where he will take his place. And to make the platband framing look more natural, the free space is supplemented with special panels, which are called an extension.
Varieties
Depending on the design project, the following types of extensions can be used:
- Wooden;
- MDF;
- PVC
- Metal.
The most common are MDF products, which are most often found both on the shelves of construction stores, and in apartments of citizens, thus closing the inconspicuous slope of the doorway. The next most popular products are wood products and only then only the metallic type of extras.
No less popular have been made of polyvinyl chloride. These products are easy to use and maintain, so they are increasingly being used to frame doorways.
In addition to the material of manufacture, the frame of the slopes can be divided into three categories:
- With missing edge;
- With an existing edge;
- Telescopic view.
The edges of the first type of finishing do not have processing, but represent the simplest evenly cut edges. They are closed with platbands, installed on top of the ends of this product. The disadvantage of using add-ons, on which there is no lining, is the potential fragility due to the penetration of water vapor into the product.
An add-on with an edge has a corresponding processing. This type is much better protected from moisture. Some inconvenience associated with the extension having machined edges is the need to select the exact size in width. If this is not done, then the edge will have to be cut, which will automatically deprive it of all the benefits.
Telescopic extensions are distinguished by the presence of a machined groove and ridge on the side parts. If you need to close a wider slope, you only need to take another product and connect it to another. Some differences in width are also easily eliminated by the usual extension of two parts without losing an attractive appearance. Thus, the decorative element frames the doorway, making it finished and beautiful.
How to make do-it-yourself do-it-yourselfers?
If it did not work out to buy a set of extras together with the door block, then you can always make this element yourself. And in the case of decorating the house with wood, such a solution will be optimal.
For work, you can choose ordinary planed boards with a thickness of not more than 20 mm. The width is selected based on the depth of the doorway. To exclude the warpage option, which is constantly pursued by natural wood, you can use the panel MDF or PVC. Such materials are well suited for decorating the opening of the front door both outside and inside.
Often used panels have a groove and a comb. So that they do not interfere, you should cut off the excess with a jigsaw or a hand circular saw. For soft material, use a chisel, which easily removes any comb. The cut side should be processed to give it a suitable appearance for docking with the clypeus. Wood is planed with a planer or a milling cutter, and PVC panels are simply cut evenly with a stationery knife.
Under a homemade add-on, you can lay a heater, for example, mineral wool. This will save the owners of the apartment from extraneous sounds coming from the landing. This insulation perfectly delays noise, so using it to decorate a doorway will be the right solution. In addition to the absence of extraneous sounds, the use of mineral wool will make the front door warmer, because there will be no drafts and cold bridges.
Ways to install extensions on the front door
Finishing the doorway of the front door can occur in three ways:
- due to the door frame;
- mounted on the wall of the opening itself;
- mounted on a special frame.
In most cases, mounting an additional board involves the use of a special groove selected on a box beam. And the main material for fastening here are “liquid” nails. Due to the fact that the extension does not carry a load, adhesive bonding will be quite enough.
An alternative to “liquid” nails are self-tapping screws. They are twisted into a decorative element on the front side. But if you do not hide it with the appropriate overlay, then the appearance of such a finish will not be entirely attractive. In rare cases, nails with a decorative hat are used for fastening. But this option involves an appropriate interior design of the hallway.
Whatever installation method you choose, the following actions will be performed:
- Two side blanks of the same size are cut;
- Mounted on the side slopes of the opening;
- The upper workpiece is cut;
- It is installed between the side elements.
This algorithm can be performed in the opposite direction, when the sheathing of the opening of the front door begins with the upper element. In this case, the side extensions must occupy a position between the floor and the upper bar. But at any junction, installation is made only from the side elements. This is the most correct and convenient option.
To make the slopes as tight as possible, silicone sealant is laid in the groove on the box beam. Next, an extension is inserted into it, fixed by one of the listed methods. Thus, the absence of air movement through the junction of the workpieces and the door block is achieved.
What to do if there is no groove
Finishing the slopes with dobers can be made not only if there is a special groove in the box. This causes some inconvenience in terms of creating a clear and even contour of the opening. But in this case, you can achieve the desired result.
To carry out work on installing the add-ons on a box without a groove, it is necessary:
- measure the depth of the doorway from the edge to the box beam;
- file wooden blanks for the frame;
- install the frame using bars, building level and self-tapping screws;
- to fix the frames on the frame using mounting glue, screws or nails.
According to this plan, you can perform future work and get a smooth and beautifully designed doorway.
Extras on metal doors
Recently, the installation of metal entrance doors has become very popular. These blocks do not have a special groove for the installation of fittings, although there is a clear need for them due to the minimum width of the iron box. And here drywall comes to the rescue.
To install the extensions in the opening with a metal entrance door, it is necessary to cut the strips, the length of which is equal to the depth of the slopes. The number of parts depends on the height of the box beam. The installation frequency should not exceed 30 cm, which allows to give the finish proper durability. Planks are glued to the wall with glue. If necessary, an additional part is attached to one part so that the level of the walls exactly matches the contour of the door block.
When the peculiar frame is ready, installation of additional elements begins. For work, any materials that are available to the owner of the apartment are suitable. Additional strips are fixed with mounting glue applied to the inner surface of each element. Upon completion of the work, it is necessary to install the platbands on a new entrance metal door.
Platbands for the front door
If the extensions are a continuation of the box, filling the slope of the opening, then its casing can be called the casing. And there is also a large selection.
Purpose and varieties
The immediate task facing such an element as the platband is to frame the doorway. They decorate these interior elements. Modern door trim can be divided into the following categories:
- flat;
- rounded
- curly.
The first option allows docking in any form. But rounded and curly platbands can be sawed only at an angle of 45 degrees. In this case, you must have a special device called a miter box.
In addition to the form, the platbands can be divided into:
- Monolithic;
- With integrated cable channel.
The use of monolithic elements can be considered a classic option for framing doorways. But cable channels began to be placed in platbands in order to “hide” extra wires from prying eyes. These structural elements are made of PVC and consist of two parts. One is attached to a wall or box, and the other serves as a decorative cover to cover the wires laid inside.
Ways to install platbands on the front door.
Platbands by the method of fastening can be divided into:
- Overhead;
- Telescopic.
The first method involves fixing the elements with nails driven through the body of the platband into a box or wall. Other types of fasteners can also be used that will be hidden under the decorative element.
Telescopic platbands are installed using a special comb inserted into the groove on the extension or additional level. In this case, you can use glue to fix the part more strongly in its place.
